I've made a point of riding to
vote every time it was possible. I remember in November 2007 that we
had a really hard time in South Bend. There were local elections, a
snow storm and a funeral to make. I rode first to vote then off to
the service for a Brother who would have done the same. Many of my
Brothers and Sisters voted then got their bikes for the service.
I've always seen both equally the same in importance. The statement
of respect and acknowledgement for a fallen Brother and for an
institution which insures our freedoms requires that we Ride To
Vote! This year with a Presidential Election I would hope that everyone
would have ridden to their voting places to cast their ballot. With
Indiana being a "Battleground" this election I expected to see a
long line when I arrived. Not so. Do to early voting, the lines were
short (although I did have to actually wait this time). I spent some
of the time tutoring a young voter on our scanning system. It might
be fitting to mention that the absent tee ballots were far greater
then I have ever seen before and the precinct officials were adding
them into the scanner as quickly as possible (or it would be one
long night ahead). Yes, I rode. I actually received many comments about the bike (all
good). A Sheriff who had been checking ID's actually took time out
to take a closer look at it. He made a remark about having ridden a
400cc Kawasaki years ago. It is good to see that even poll workers
are interested in riding. I have been approached several times and
been told that on Election Day many bikers remember to ride to vote,
but forget to take a picture of their bike. That is a great start.
I've always tried to get people to send me pictures for the site -
so everyone will know, most importantly elected officials, that we
do in-fact Ride And Vote.
